The world’s longest railway tunnel is opening

On the first day of June, the third tunnel in a 3,100 m high rock massif is opening in Switzerland. It is the longest railway tunnel in the world – it has 57 km and the passengers have up to 2,300 m of rock over their heads.

This several billions worth project has been completed one year earlier and it has dethroned the until then longest railway tunnel Seikan connecting under the seabed the Japanese islands Honshu and Hokkaido. The construction group HOCHTIEF has taken part in the success of this project of the century.
