The need of a new air traffic control tower was brought about by an increasing significance of the airport in Ostrava in the traffic infrastructure of the Moravian and Silesian Region, which records more than 21,000 take-offs and landings per year. The refurbishment was not important only for the passenger air transportation, but also for cargo transport, which uses a business and warehouse zone recently built in close proximity to the airport.

The new centre and a six-storey air traffic control tower meets all challenging parametres necessary for this type of building. The workplace of the air traffic controllers is situated on the top sixth floor of the control tower at a height of 20 metres. The height and position of the ATC tower allows an optimal view of both 22/04 runway thresholds and view of the final approach points from both directions. A special glazing of the control tower centre, soundproofing and elimination of sun radiation creates the necessary comfort to the air traffic controllers for their error-free work.

Since the completion in February 2016, the new operation centre and the control tower enables provision of safe, up-to-date and cost-efficient air traffic operation services at the airport in Ostrava at least for the next thirty years.
